2019 Walkathon Round Vitilevu (475km)

Theme: Walk Against NCD’s
Date: 10–20 August 2019
Venue: Vitilevu Island, Fiji

The “2019 Walkathon Round Vitilevu (475km)” was organized by the Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association from 10-20 August 2019 to raise awareness on the rising crisis of non-communicable diseases in Fiji.

The Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association is the National Sports Organization for mountaineering in Fiji. It is recognized by the Fiji National Sports Commission.

Non-communicable diseases- obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer – are a major social and economic development challenge for Fiji. These diseases, which are highly prevalent in the nation, drain government resources and have a negative impact on quality of life. Studies show that many adolescents in Fiji are overweight, and an increasing number of them are obese. Diseases typically only observed in adults, such as type 2 diabetes, are now being diagnosed in young people. The four main risk factors are poor diet, insufficient physical activity, and tobacco and alcohol abuse.

Young people have a key role to play in building strong populations. By teaching the young people to adopt healthy behaviors, we can reduce the early onset of non-communicable diseases.
